How to connect your Netgear Wi-Fi extender

Need to know

  • Quick setup: Use the WPS button for the fastest connection—no password needed.
  • Best spot: Place your extender halfway between your router and dead zone for the strongest signal.
  • Smart fix: If your Wi-Fi drops, check whether your devices are on the same band—especially 2.4GHz.

Pesky dead zones don’t have to interrupt your streaming and scrolling time. With a Netgear® Wi-Fi™ extender, you can get a strong signal in any corner of your home.

At Asurion, our experts help customers get and stay online wherever they roam. If you’re wondering where to place a Wi-Fi extender or researching the best Wi-Fi router for your home, we’ve got answers.

This guide walks you through how to connect a Netgear Wi-Fi extender with your browser or Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS). It also shares tips for placing the extender (hint: not next to the fridge) and troubleshooting annoying connection issues.

Connect using the WPS button method

Does your spare bedroom or garage have a terrible internet connection? You don’t have to put up with lagging YouTube videos and Google’s no-connection dinosaur forever. An extender can boost your Wi-Fi signal so everything loads quickly.

WPS is the easiest way to connect your Netgear Wi-Fi range extender:

  • Plug in your Wi-Fi extender in the same room as the router.
  • Wait a minute or two until the Power LED light turns solid green or blue. The extender won’t pair if this light is blinking.
  • Press the WPS button on the router. This button may say Pair or show two arrows pointing at each other. If you’re unsure how to locate it, refer to the router’s user manual.
  • Quickly press the WPS button on the extender. The Router LED light will blink while the router is pairing with it.
  • The LED lights will stop blinking or change color when your Netgear WPS connection is successful.

If your router has two bands—2.4GHz and 5GHz—repeat this setup process. That way, it will stay connected if one band stops working. Once you have completed your Netgear network setup, unplug the extender and move it to wherever you prefer. Don’t leave it in the same room as your router, or it won’t improve your Wi-Fi signal much.

Manual setup via the Netgear installation assistant

WPS not working? No worries. You can also use your phone or computer to connect your Netgear Wi-Fi extender to a new router.

  • Open a web browser and go to mywifiext.net. Alternatively, type in the extender’s IP address, which should be printed on the box or a label on the device.
  • A setup wizard called the Netgear Genie should appear. It may ask you to create an administrator username—“admin” or your name works fine—and a password. It may also allow you to rename the extender network to make it easier to find later.
  • Set up two security questions in case you forget your login details and click Next.
  • Select your home Wi-Fi network from the list and click Next.
  • Enter your Wi-Fi password > Next.
  • Wait a few minutes for the extender’s Power and Router LED lights to turn solid green or blue.

Is your Netgear extender not connecting even after trying both methods? Asurion offers 24/7 tech help to get your device up and running.

Placement tips for optimal performance

Location is everything, especially when you’re setting up a Wi-Fi extender. For optimal results, position the device halfway between the router and the area where you experience a poor signal. If your Wi-Fi doesn’t work in the basement, for instance, try putting the extender at the top of the stairs.

Avoid barriers that may block the signal. For example, the device probably won’t extend your Wi-Fi coverage if it’s tucked behind a wall. Microwaves and metal objects can also disrupt the connection. Got a giant fridge? Don’t put the extender right next to it on the kitchen counter.

Sometimes, the LED lights tell you how strong your signal is. A dim or flickering light means you don’t have the best connection. You can also check the signal strength in the Netgear app.

You may need to adjust your wireless extender a few times to find the best spot. Be patient.

Troubleshooting common issues

You’ve followed every step in this Wi-Fi range extender guide, but your camera still won’t connect. These Netgear troubleshooting tips can help get your home tech back online:

  • Router not detecting the extender? Restart both the router and the extender to refresh the connection. If your internet keeps cutting out, check why your Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting.
  • Check the Wi-Fi network and password. Make sure you’re connecting to your own network—not a neighbor’s—and entering the correct password.
  • Update the firmware. Use the Netgear app or web portal to install pending updates. Keeping your extender up to date can fix common connection issues. Learn more about how to boost your Wi-Fi signal at home.
  • Try a factory reset. If nothing else works, locate the small Factory Reset button on the extender, hold it for seven seconds, then wait for it to reboot. After that, repeat the setup steps to reconnect.
