How to use the new Maps features in iOS 18

Apple gave Maps a big update with iOS 18, and it’s great news if you like to explore. Whether you’re planning a hike or just want to navigate with confidence when there’s no signal, the latest iPhone Maps tools are here to help.

At Asurion, we help millions of people get the most out of their tech every day. Here’s how to use the new Apple Maps features in iOS 18, including offline hiking trails, topographic maps, and custom walking routes.

Download offline hiking routes

The Apple Maps update now lets you download hiking trails so you can access them without a cell signal.

To try it:

  1. Open the Maps app.
  2. Search for a national park or hiking area.
  3. Tap the location, then tap Download.
  4. Choose the map area you want to save, then tap Download again.

Once saved, you can view trails, elevation, and nearby landmarks even when you’re offline.

Use new topographic maps

With iOS 18, Apple Maps now includes topographic maps in supported areas. These show contour lines, elevation changes, and trail details—useful when you're outdoors.

To view them:

  1. Open Maps and zoom in on a hiking area or national park. If topographic data is available, it will appear automatically.
  2. Tap trails or landmarks to see more details like length, difficulty, and elevation.

This makes it easier to prepare for terrain changes before you go.

Create your own walking or hiking route

You can now build custom routes for walking or hiking right in the Maps app.

Here’s how:

  1. Open Maps and tap the search bar.
  2. Enter your starting point and destination.
  3. Tap Walking as your route type.
  4. Tap Add Stop to include specific waypoints or landmarks.
  5. Review the route and tap Go when you’re ready.

You can also share your custom route or save it for future use.

Keep your Maps updated

To get these new tools, your iPhone must be running iOS 18.

To update:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. Tap Download and Install if an update is available.
