How to fix no audio through HDMI on PS5

Fast fix

  • Check the basics. Volume up, TV unmuted, right input—start simple.
  • Reset the connection. Unplug and replug the HDMI cable (yes, both ends).
  • Still silent? The issue could be the port itself. Visit your nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion for a free diagnostic.

There’s nothing like settling into a game only to hear… nothing. If your PlayStation® 5 is showing up just fine on screen but giving you zero sound through HDMI, don’t panic—it’s a common issue, and it’s usually fixable.

At Asurion, we repair gaming console issues every day, including HDMI and audio problems just like this. Here’s how to get the sound back on so you can get back in the game.

Check the obvious first

Start with the basics:

Verify HDMI connections

Loose or faulty HDMI cables are one of the most common reasons for no sound.

  • Disconnect and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends.
  • Try a different HDMI port on your TV.
  • Test with another HDMI cable if you have one.

Update your PS5

System bugs and outdated software can mess with audio output.

  • Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
  • Choose Update System Software and follow the prompts.

Not sure if you’re up to date? Here’s how to update PS5 system software step-by-step.

Set the correct audio output

Sometimes your PS5 is sending audio to the wrong place.

  1. Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
  2. Set Output Device to HDMI Device (TV).
  3. Scroll down and turn Enable 3D Audio for TV Speakers off (some setups conflict with this feature).
  4. Set Audio Format (Priority) to Linear PCM for best compatibility.

More details on this are covered in how to fix PS5 audio issues.

Restart and reconnect

If nothing else works:

  • Power off your PS5 completely.
  • Unplug the HDMI cable.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it all back in and power on.

Sometimes a full refresh is all it takes to resolve audio handshake issues between the PS5 and your TV.

Still no sound?

Make sure your HDMI cable supports both 4K and audio passthrough. If you’re using an HDMI switch, soundbar, or receiver in between the console and TV, try connecting your PS5 directly.

Also review how to connect PS5 to a TV to confirm your physical setup is right.

If you’ve tried all of this and still can’t hear anything, your console’s HDMI port may be damaged. Bring it to your nearest uBreakiFix by Asurion store for a free diagnostic.

FAQ

Why does my PS5 have no sound but shows video?

This usually means the HDMI cable is working for video but not audio—check cable quality, port damage, and sound settings.

What audio format should my PS5 use?

Linear PCM is the most universally compatible. Try switching to it if Dolby or DTS isn’t working.

Will a damaged HDMI port cause no audio?

Yes—especially if some pins inside the port are bent. That can interrupt sound while video continues to work.

Can I fix a PS5 HDMI port myself?

It’s not recommended. This kind of repair is better left to PlayStation repair pros.
